Settling into a full-time job, at GeoConnections, and going to school in the evenings (I am going to meet Erin AH and Jenn soon ... pretty sure they are both in the class I mention attending.) Looks like I signed up to help Kristen at The Charlatan and that I quit Subway, did I end up going back to Subway later? I have a hard time leaving that chain.
There is a quote from my dad! I don't exactly remember where or when or the context in which he was saying it but totally sounds like something he would say. Probably was on the phone. Sadly, I can no longer hear how his voice sounds in my head, it left quickly and I hate that it is gone.
Noted Post: The I Can See!! post describes one of my favourite personal anecdotes, I remember it happening and I still laugh about it to this day.

This is way easier to read than the last Throw Back post when I was deep into a serious depressive episode. In April of 2007, lots of my friends were commenting on posts, especially Steph, and I can often still hear their voices in my head when I read their words. I am am excited to learn more about the late Spring and Summer of 2007. It seems like it was a month when I was figuring out summer work and trying to find a new roommate. I can't really remember what happened! Was that the summer I started at GeoConnections? Was the new roommate Jake? It is strange how hard it is to put together a timeline 9 years afterwards. Guess I will have to keep reading to find out.
Noted Post: Near the end of the month I posted about a late night interaction with Taylor. I can remember the good-bye that I described and how touched I was by her sweetness and slurred compliments. It was a very strong moment, early on in our friendship. I like that, 9 years later, she is still reading my blog.

Closing It Up
Turning on/off alarm systems is nothing new to me. We had them at both Subways (Paris and Ottawa), Taco Bell, Second Cup, and many other places that I worked when I was younger. However, since I have moved into non-food-service type jobs, they have diminished - or my need to use them has. Government offices in Ottawa have Commissionaires, other office buildings have large security systems run automatically or by management companies, etc.
Well, tonight I closed down the Forrec office. We have about 120 employees but by 9:00pm on a Friday I was the last one working. There are some basic closing down tasks, lights, checking doors, and then setting the security system. It brought me back to my early food service days.
I could have easily stayed past 9:00pm too! I was enjoying what I was working on and definitely felt like there was more I would have liked to get done. However, my work week is 37.5 to 44 hours long and going over 44 requires approval, so I kicked myself out to avoid that. The adjustment to salary has been strange, closing down an office was even stranger.

TB - August 2006
Throwback Thursday - Way back when I first did the tags for Always Standing I was trying to pick the best 3 for each post. That didn't work well and now as I go through old months I am trying to update the tagging too, which means that these seemingly easy to do Throwback posts end up taking me a lot of time.
Man, did I party a lot that last month of the summer in 2006! It seems that I just threw caution to the wind and spent my time working insane hours and going out a whole bunch at night. The little trip I took to The Cottage looks like it went well too. That was SO long ago, it was the 'old' cottage back then.
Noted Post: I like the list I gave of important Moments in my life. I also like the post about finding my pink clothes, because I still remember that happening - almost 8 years later.

TB - July 2006
Throwback Thursday - I still haven't figured out a good way to read these old months from Always Standing. Ideally, it would be easy to scroll through, chronologically, see comments, and add new ones; however, there isn't an easy way so just try whatever works for you.
From the looks of these post, the summer of 2006 was hot and busy for me in Ottawa. It was the summer that I worked at both Subway and Second Cup, while living at Le Manoir and dating W. The reason the blog was called Always Standing is that a summer working two food service jobs literally meant I was always standing.
Noted Post: There are lots of good posts in July 2006, but I like the little poem I wrote called Today about summer rain.

TB - June 2006
Throwback Thursday - I started writing Always Standing in June 2006. Here is a look back at a previous month of my life. To read in chronological order, scroll to the bottom of the page and read up. Suggestion: Click on the first post of the month and use the Newer Post to view the posts with comments.
Let's start at the beginning! Almost 8 years ago I started Always Standing on June 12, 2006. I don't even really understand my very first post or the reason that it gives for starting the blog. However, I think I remember that I had planned to review movies here - something I rarely, if ever, do. The rest of the posts are mainly about working at Subway and Second Cup, it was a really busy summer but a fun one.
Noted Post: The Story Of My Heart is a cute little recap of my relationships up to dating W.

Fattening Food In February
I know that to stay healthy and on the good side of my depression I need to take my medication, sleep well at night, eat healthy, work out, and keep my life structured. It is hard to be motivated for all of that, even more so in the winter, especially with working more. I haven't been very healthy with my eating since Christmas.
Luckily, I have gotten so much better with my eating over the past few years that today at lunch when I wasn't feeling up for getting something that I 'should' I still ate pretty reasonably. This means I got a 6" sub, a cookie, and diet coke at Subway instead of my usual roast beef salad with 0-fat dressing and a chocolate milk.
I haven't had the bread at Subway in so long, because not only does it go straight to my hips but it goes there and has little bread babies that then go straight to my thighs. Still, the bread was delicious and even though they have changed the style of the steak meat a little, the sub was amazing.

Change Of Season
Spring means...
Rain and sun and warm breezes
People out walking or playing in the streets
Sidewalks in The Glebe are even more packed on weekends
Subway gets extremely busy
Essays are due and exams are close by
Neighbours in their yards gardening and clearing out the leaves
Steph and Anna's birthdays
The temperature stays between 5 and 10 degrees
Lots of garbage shows up through the melting ice
A new drive to get in shape and lots of runners on the canal
Soon evenings will be spent sitting on patios

Mini Diary
TIME: Night
I am sleeping in Taylor's bed. I normally sleep on the couch when I stay over at TKH's apartment but since Taylor was away I slept in her bed. The bed is amazing! It is the softest, most comfortable bed in the whole world, even better than my own which I have now decided is the second most comfortable bed in the world after sleeping in Taylor's.
TIME: 7:00
The alarm goes off. I want to sleep more so I set the alarm again for 8:00 and think to myself that I can be in my own bed sleeping at 2:30.
TIME: 8:00
Wake up, pack my things, and get ready to head to work. This does include brushing my teeth with toothpaste and my finger as well as sitting on the bed staring blankly and for no reason at the clock for 6 minutes. I am thankful that it is only 6 and a half hours away from 2:30 when I can sleep.
TIME: 8:45
I arrive at work and check my e-mail. I eat a Crunchie chocolate bar for breakfast that I randomly had stashed in my desk. I read the Daily, an e-mail that updates the high level activities for the different areas of the department. I reply to and send a whole bunch of e-mails to people in preparation for the three articles that I have to write over the next week. The research stage is nearly finished. I can sleep at 2:30.
TIME: 9:30
The admin assistant tells me that I need to tell her what days and hours I intend to work in April. My boss isn't going to be in until later so I discuss the issue with the acting manager and then my editor. We decide on full days Tuesdays and Thursdays. This entire process takes much longer than it should. It is either because I'm very tired or because I work for the government, one of these things will be fixed at 2:30
TIME: 10:30
While riding the bus I do some last minute studying on the way to campus. For the most part I just daydream about 2:30 and being in my bed sleeping.
TIME: 11:00
I sit outside the class room to read my study notes again. I can't wait for this 3 hour class to be over. Then I realise that the class actually ends at 2:30 so it will even later before I get to be home in bed.
TIME: 11:35
Class starts and the midterm is handed out. I recognize all the questions and am not surprised by them. I do however not know or have forgotten about half of the answers to them. I start to fill in what I know. I am happy to hear that the midterm is for the full 2 hour lecture, we can leave when we are done, and that our 1 hour discussion group that usually starts at 1:30 is cancelled. Maybe I will get home and be sleeping by 2:30.
TIME: 12:15
I finish the midterm really quickly and I will definitely fail it. I'm glad to have at least gone to class, put the effort it, and done some studying. I will have to pick it up more in this class though. I decide to take the bus home instead of the 5 minute walk. I'm just so tired and can't wait for my 2:30 bedtime
TIME: 1:00
I have settled into bed after making it home and changing into pajamas. I call Jerrica to see how she is feeling and find out that she is working the long shift today so I won't see her until much later. I check my e-mail, Facebook, and post on my blog. I intend to probably watch an episode or two of 30 Rock online before going to sleep around 2:30.

The House Is Warm
We had a housewarming party for Die Höhle over the weekend and so many of my friends showed up. The place is too small for a big party with mingling, so you can pretty much stand or sit in the kitchen or gather around the coffee table. Not much was split on the carpet, and what was came from Jerrica anyway. A few people couldn't make it because they were away for the weekend. Though Taylor and Kristen, who aren't even living in Ottawa for the summer, were around and came over. Heather stopped by and Anne stayed until just before the buses stopped. Anna even dropped in for a bit, despite being in the middle of a fencing tournament. Dave and Steph were at the apartment for dinner first and stayed for the party. Dan and Justain stopped by later. Amanda, a co-worker from my Subway days and who still works there with Jerrica, came with her boyfriend. Em was around trying to choke down some wine and my cousin Carla was staying with me for a visit so she got to meet everyone. It was nice to see so many of my friends, and have them gathered in the new place. I hope we are visited by everyone often.

First Bike
I biked to work today for the first time this year. My bike had been sitting in the sunporch over the winter and this past weekend Jerrica pulled it out to get to Subway. I decided she was probably right and I should start biking to work myself. I didn't get around to it until today as I needed to figure out the combination for my bike lock as well as find my helmet. The bike this morning was just as fast as I remembered, and it was easier then expected. I might not be as out of shape as I thought. The trip was slightly uncomfortable, I don't think I had my gel seat on and I think I need my seat raised. Unfortunately everyone keeps telling me that it is going to rain today so that will suck for the bike home.

Moonlighting
The past two days I have been moonlighting as a Sandwich Artist. It is good to be back at Subway and I have served a few regulars who remember me. The free food is good, as is the ability to make it exactly as I want. The past two 15 hour days have taken their toll and I will be going to be very early tonight (as I do it again tomorrow.) My cool boss has said I will be back at the pay I left at, which is great. For the life of me I can't remember what it was though. I have not had the chance to type up any notes as I planned nor do I get a pay cheque for a while but I'm still happy to be doing it.

Back To The Sub
Tonight I'm closing at Subway. I have two other closes this week. I'm just helping out while The Cool Boss has surgery and people go away for the holidays. Jerrica is taking my laptop with her when she goes this morning and I'm heading over right after work. I hope to type up a bunch of notes from my course while I'm there earning an extra buck before Christmas and London. I have visions of huge pay cheques and productive nights of studying. These dreams will soon be shattered because it is Subway - money and productivity are not a reality. I think it will be a fun month working there again, and I am looking forward to it, mostly for the free subs.

I Want To Go Now

Monday, 3 September 2007
The Sub

-mispronouncing item names (Chipotle, Parmesan, Monterey, Oregano)
-letting us put the vegetables on when you want it toasted
-getting to the cash and then ordering another sub
-letting us glove up when you only want a drink
-leaving a mess at the table (Everyone hates this one)
It is usually pretty frustrating when taking your order if you are also...
-talking on your cell phone
-talking to your friend
-making out (Ok, I hate this one)
Despite the pain that customers can be I still hope to open a store with Teri at some point.

The Customers
I just finished my last shift at Subway and I realised one of the hardest things about leaving that job is leaving the customers and customer service part of it. I loved meeting and interacting with all the people who came through the store. I had created little relationships with many of them. It was the perfect outlet for my chattiness. There were always a number of good looking guys too, gotta love the eye candy!

Intense Weekend
I don't know how to write about this weekend. I have not even fully recovered from the experience. Little Brother Mike was in town. He is on tour with his band and two others, along with a driver and their promoter. They had a gig downtown on Friday night, and then a couple of days off before they headed further out east. The guys (17 of them between the ages of 16-23) stayed at my place for the weekend. Since I have no idea how to describe the events of the past three days I'm going to let the quotes speak for themselves. Note "Band Member" is used when I wish to preserve anonymity, have forgotten the guys name, or have forgotten which one said it.
--"We are going to be late, we just got Bear Maced. Everyone is just a little enraged right now." -Mike to Me on the phone
--"Your sister's cute Mike" -Carl
---"Rob? Ben? Jason? There are 17 of you, I'm just not going to learn them all. Nick? Steve? Fred?" -Me to Josh when trying to remember his name
------"Fred is good. I can be Fred." -Josh
--(Silence) -Charlie while staring at sleeping Band Members
--"Last time we were here we saw only one roommate. That Librarian one. Now they are like everywhere." -Wally
--"Is there any factories in town?" -Nick
------"Not really. It is kinda a government town." -Me
------"Oh, like The Beer Store." -Nick
------"No, not governmental retail. Like Health Canada, Natural Resources, like the government government." -Me
------"Oh well, no factories, I can't live here." -Nick
--"Oh, Wally." -Emily
--"Bear Mace, where do you even get that?" -Me
------"Hunting shops." -A Band Member
--"I just got my first hate mail." -Carl
--"Is black lipstick Metal or more Goth?" -Ami
--"I am so so so sorry." -Ami, Tiffany, and Me to the bartender
--"Chris, Chris, stop. Your going to get me drunk." -Jerrica
--"Woah. You don't do that." -Nick to Me after I hit Glenn
--"No. Don't tell anyone where the pop is hidden. It will be our little secret." -A Band Member to Me
--"I think that is going to bruise" -Me to Glenn after he punched Me
------"Woah. You don't do that." -Nick to Glenn
--"YOU. GET IN THE FUCKING HOUSE!!" -Me to Many Band Members while trying to control what looked like an impending fight
--"I'm just trying to help get everyone inside." -Many Band Members to Me
------"OK THEN. GET IN THE FUCKING HOUSE!!" -Me
--"Guys, chill. He is my dealer." -Me
--"I hate being dragged and then put places" -Tiffany
--"I want to kick that guys ass" -Nick to Me
------"No! Huh? Wait? What? No! Lie to me, tell me your your trying to help and get everyone inside. Lie to me." -Me
--"Chris stay here, I'm sober." -Mike to Me about who would talk to The Cop
--"HOLY SHIT!" -Me to The Cop after seeing two more cop cars pull into the street
--"Alright then, we are going to hug this out. Get up here. Other arm. That's it." -Mark to Me
--"Next time wake me up earlier." -Mike to Me
--"The Librarian is hot." -Wally and Carl about Emily

--"Oh, I so knew that is what it was all about." -Ami to Me
--"Any one who cooks with chickpeas is amazing." -Josh about Emily
--"It is when you shit along the top of the toilet so when the next person flushes it, it just flushes shit, not clear water. You know, I have always wanted to do a Top Shelf at Top Shelf." -A Band Member to Me
--"So do you really really like Like like like him?" -Emily to Me about A Band Member
--"You didn't really enjoy your time in high school if you weren't having lots of anal sex" -Wally to Me

--"Oh, so like the only one wearing a white shirt?" -Anna about Josh
--"Wayne's World is the best movie in the world." -Andreas

------"Yea it was fine. I don't shower on the weekends." -Wes
------"What? I don't even know how to respond to that." -Me
--"Are you kidding? I love Faulkner. I love stream-of-consciousness." -Josh
--"It's totally hit and miss with those guys." -Anna
--"I don't get it. I'm perfectly nice to chicks and get nowhere. Wally walks up to them and says 'Get on your knees bitch' and they all love him." -Carl
--"Mike. You know we could have had this talk anytime this weekend. Now is probably not a great time." -Me to Mike after everyone is packed and ready to go in the vans and he decides to have a nice heart to heart with his big sister
--"Alright Chris, goal for next weekend: No emergency vehicles at 900 Colonel By." -Emily to Me

Terrible Bike Ride
There is nothing like showing up for a Government Office Job covered in blood and bike chain grease. As usual the chain came off my bike. I'm getting The 18 Year Old Co-Worker to fix it at Subway tomorrow, I'm sick of cutting up my fingers every morning putting the chain back on. The gears are also messed up so hopefully he can adjust all that. To make the bike ride worse, the streets I take in the morning are a disaster. Pot holes! Uneven Asphalt! Sand! Man Holes! Huge Cracks! I don't understand why because I bike though a wealthy area, but they have the worst roads I have seen in Ottawa. Thank goodness for my helmet because one of these days I'm going to wipe out.

Subway PDA's
I don't know why people think Public Displays Of Affection (PDA) are OK. I admit there is the time and the place; romantic restaurant, dance floor at a club, your wedding, a concert, but not, I repeat NOT, while placing a sub order at Subway. It may seem like I'm behind a big counter filled with vegetables, but I'm not that far away, only a foot and a half really. So please no tongue, don't grope, fondle, stroke, repeatedly kiss, or generally make out infront of me while I'm trying to make your sandwich. Somethings are cool; go ahead and give him a quick peck on the cheek, put your arm around her, lean back against him, but keep it clean and pleasant please. Subway is a PDA free zone!
