And So It Is Named

I like to name my houses. It tends to happen naturally, when you listen to people talk about places they live they tend to have a name for the house, though it is often related to the address. I find that a tad boring and in Ottawa, stepped it up a notch. Especially moving into my second house, which was an epic mansion (may it rest in peace) that was falling apart but totally worthy of a great name. So far in my life, these have been my houses...

1984 - 1985 - Cambridge - I was born in Cambridge, Ontario. I lived with my parents in a small house until I was one and a half. I obviously don't remember it, though they have shown it to me a few times since.
1985 - 2003 - Paris - So, the first two are named for the towns. I only lived in one house in Paris so instead of calling it by the street, I always just say Paris. The house was sold this past summer.
2003 - 2004 - Rez - While I was living in residence, Glengarry House, at Carleton Steph, Em, and I called it Glen, to distinguish it from the other residences on campus. However, after moving out it just gets referred to as Rez.
2004 - 2006 - Glen - This house is named after the street and even though it could get confused with my residence house, especially as I was living with the same people, it never was.
2006 - 2008 - Le Manoir - It was this mansion that inspired the need for awesome house names. I wanted to make it sound ostentatious, so picked to name it in French. It means The Mansion, however we have always pronounced it so horribly that it would make anyone who speaks French cringe in pain. It seemed like an ever revolving door of roommates there (including Ami, Em, Anna, Wes, Jake, Jer, and a few others) but they all called it Le Manoir.
2008 - 2010 - Die Höhle - Following in the foreign languages vein, Jer, Em, and I decided to name the next apartment in German. This was because the outside of it was very ugly, a big grey 1960's box of a house in a beautiful Victorian neighbourhood. It look like a German war bunker. Translated it means The Cave and again we mispronounced it terribly, much to the dismay of the one friend I have who speaks German. During the second year Linds lived with us and later on JennB, they both called it Die Höhle.
2010 - 2010 - The Cottage - We got the cottage when I was 16, so sometime around 2000. About 4 or 5 years back my parents tore down the original building and set about building a house on the beach that they could eventually live in full time. Well, the time has come. They sold the other house and live at The Cottage, though the name remains. I have never really lived there, but I would consider it an important residence in my life.

"So what about the new Toronto apartment?" you ask. After about a week, Kristen and I set about coming up with a name. Our landlord is Jewish and we live in a fairly Jewish neighbourhood. (Though there is a Catholic Church right down the street from us that plays its bells all the time and I have seen actual nuns there. However, I don't know where our closest Synagogue is.) We are basing this assumption about our neighbourhood on the number of people we see in yarmulkes walking on the streets, that the local grocery store has a huge kosher section, and the ice cream parlor sells kosher brownies. It seemed fitting that the language we pick for naming this one be Hebrew. This was easier said than done!

Hebrew uses different letters, not just some fancy two dots above the 'o' like in Die Höhle but a totally different thing all together. Hebrew does not have an Alphabet it is instead considered an Abjad. (This means it is a segmental script containing symbols for consonants only, and the vowels are optionally written with diacritics or 'pointing'). We decided that we wanted to called it Grown-Up Apartment. We are working hard on this place to make it nice and to avoid that student feel. But, even with all the online translating sites out there, we couldn't find out how to say that in Hebrew. We had to settle for Adult House (which has some funny connotations on its own). I'm sure, like the other houses I have named in languages other than English, I am screwing this up horribly, but we have called our place...Which seems to be spelt in the Latin (or Roman) Alphabet, which English uses, as something close to Rrunuv Bayit. Obviously pronouncing it is also challenging. The 'Rr' is rolled but then the rest of Rrunuv sounds like it is spelt and Bayit is more like 'buy-it'. Though I'm sure this is wrong. When in a rush, we will sometimes refer to it as just Bayit, and that is currently our wifi name. Now, I need to go and finish painting, unpacking, cleaning, and in general settling in, so that Rrunuv Bayit can live up to its name and truly be a Grown-up Apartment.

Eating Sushi

I went to Kinki's Friday night with Anne and her friends. There are a surprising number of sushi restaurants in town, despite our great distance from any ocean. Ami introduced me to the Japanese food a couple years back and it took me a while to like it. Now I really enjoy it and wish I could eat it more often. I had never been to Kinki's which is probably the most posh of all sushi places in Ottawa. We were there for Happy Hour which is basically 2 for 1 sushi. It is right in the market, is pretty fancy, has great decor, and really good cocktails. The sushi was awesome. Maybe it was because I hadn't had it in a while but it tasted amazing. I was also surprised that there was so many pieces and that they were so big. I got a Rainbow with raw tuna, salmon, red snapper, yellowtail, mackerel, and avocado rolled over a California roll. Normally I pick something a little more tame than that, but I was feeling daring. I can't wait to go again. (Picture: Yummy Sushi, by Will.)

Mouse Crisis, Part Six

They're back! I don't know if they they just had a bunch of babies or were sleeping over the winter and have just woken up, but we had a mouse in our house the other night. We always hear them in the walls but haven't seen them running around in a while. I was sleeping and Jerrica was on my computer when she saw one out in the hall. It came into my room and at this point Jerrica ran across the room, jumped up on my bed and started screaming. I'm not used to my roommates freaking out about mice, usually I'm the only one. Wes, Em, and Ami have all had to save me from them in the past. Well, Jerrica and I stood on the bed in hysterics until we woke up Em who came and tried to catch it. It got away from her but I hope it learned it lesson and stays away.

Link's Changing

You may have noticed 'My Links' on this page change over the past few months. I have had an unwritten (until now) rule in my head that if a website wasn't updating at least once a month or so then it got the axe on my links list. Therefore I have deleted Halley's Paris Blog, Ami's Blog, and B+T's Japan Blog. It is a little sad because Halley's was hilarious but once she returned to Tacoma she stopped writing. Ami is just an amazing writer, luckily I know she will never stop writing, she has just currently picked to do it at different outlets then her blog. B+T's trip is still ongoing but they appear to be using Facebook to keep up with everyone and not their blog. Time marches on, blog use slows down, and the links get removed.

I Can See!!

I went out Friday night with Ami, her boyfriend, her boyfriend's friend, and Wendy. Ami's childhood friend who now lives in Montreal. Of course, we girls wanted to look pretty so we got all dressed up. Contacts in, heels on, hair down and curly, make-up, the whole nine yards. I love to sip martini's and feel fabulous. We had a great time. The next morning I had to wake up fairly early to bike to a leg waxing appointment. In a clumpy mascara, chapped lipped, messy hair moment that can only happen early Saturday mornings when you are hung over, I biked a couple of blocks. Half way there I reached up to brush at my eye and realised something was wrong. I touched my face again and realised I wasn't wearing my glasses. I started to panic, as I need them and didn't have time to go back for them. Then I started to get scared, as I was biking on the road, my bike started to swerve widely and I wondered how I had gotten as far as I did without them. Then I looked up at a distant front yard and realised I could see fine. Nothing was blurry. Shocked at how great my sight was, I thought for a good two blocks that I was cured, or that eye doctors had been so very wrong about my needing of glasses. Happy, thrilled actually, I couldn't believe my luck. Then it hit me, I had never done it before, but in my drunken haze the night before, I had fallen asleep with my contacts still in.

Old Window's Games

Do you remember this games? Don't you miss them? Ami's boyfriend found them and showed her where to download them off the net. I found the free download and used the self-extracting file since I don't have winzip. I can't wait to play all the old school stuff now. Oh it brings me back to Grade 10.

I'm SO Lucky

I almost wish this would stop happening to me so I can learn to be a bit better with money the hard way. But it seems that whenever I have been even the tiniest bit careless with my spending something happens, and I get some unexpected money. It is like a real game of Monopoly and I keep landing on Free Parking.

I have stretched myself a little bit financially with my brothers visit, followed shortly be the trip to Ami's cottage, followed shortly by my upcoming vacation at my own cottage. Last night I opened up a letter that had arrived to find my GST rebate. Normally this is about $60 four times a year but this year it is over $400 and there will be 3 more coming this year each at $90 a piece. So relieving to have, as that pays the rent!

Ami's Cottage

Ami, Nick, John, and I rented a car this weekend and went to Ami's cottage. The car was amazing, although we had rented a Focus, we ended up getting a free upgrade to a Grand Prix. We hung out at her cottage and with her parents for the first night and most of Saturday. There was tons of swimming and playing around their new dock. Apsley is the small town nearby where we went for diner breakfast, grocery shopping, and of course the LCBO. We all went for a long distance swim in the afternoon. On the way back we ended up swimming with a loon, it was 10-12 feet away from us. We picked up Ami's good friend and her new fiance, Kat and Shawn, and headed for Little Jack's. It is a 20 minute boat ride away and then another 25 minute hike into the bush. This is well worth it as it is a long series of waterfalls that flow into a bunch of large pools. *See Photo* It is so fun to swim in and around the rushing water. We camped out and despite forgetting a number of important camping items we survived nicely. I had a great night sleep as my tent was set up on a bed of moss. We woke to bright blue sky. After heading back to the cottage I spent the day on the dock, sunbathing, reading and swimming. I'm a little burnt and my muscles are a little sore, but that is perfect, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Intense Weekend

I don't know how to write about this weekend. I have not even fully recovered from the experience. Little Brother Mike was in town. He is on tour with his band and two others, along with a driver and their promoter. They had a gig downtown on Friday night, and then a couple of days off before they headed further out east. The guys (17 of them between the ages of 16-23) stayed at my place for the weekend. Since I have no idea how to describe the events of the past three days I'm going to let the quotes speak for themselves. Note "Band Member" is used when I wish to preserve anonymity, have forgotten the guys name, or have forgotten which one said it.

------"Woah. You don't do that." -Nick to Glenn

------"OK THEN. GET IN THE FUCKING HOUSE!!" -Me
--"Guys, chill. He is my dealer." -Me
--"I hate being dragged and then put places" -Tiffany
--"I want to kick that guys ass" -Nick to Me
------"No! Huh? Wait? What? No! Lie to me, tell me your your trying to help and get everyone inside. Lie to me." -Me
--"Chris stay here, I'm sober." -Mike to Me about who would talk to The Cop
--"HOLY SHIT!" -Me to The Cop after seeing two more cop cars pull into the street

--"Oh, I so knew that is what it was all about." -Ami to Me
--"Any one who cooks with chickpeas is amazing." -Josh about Emily
--"It is when you shit along the top of the toilet so when the next person flushes it, it just flushes shit, not clear water. You know, I have always wanted to do a Top Shelf at Top Shelf." -A Band Member to Me

--"Are you kidding? I love Faulkner. I love stream-of-consciousness." -Josh
--"It's totally hit and miss with those guys." -Anna
--"I don't get it. I'm perfectly nice to chicks and get nowhere. Wally walks up to them and says 'Get on your knees bitch' and they all love him." -Carl
--"Mike. You know we could have had this talk anytime this weekend. Now is probably not a great time." -Me to Mike after everyone is packed and ready to go in the vans and he decides to have a nice heart to heart with his big sister
--"Alright Chris, goal for next weekend: No emergency vehicles at 900 Colonel By." -Emily to Me

Sens Mile

I wanted to catch the Sens fever (even though I'm a Leafs Fan and cheering for The Ducks in this playoff series). Tonight was my only night off from work, so I headed down to Elgin Street to see what it was all about. I was hoping for something along the lines of this picture, but it wasn't even close. The street was rainy and quiet, only a few of the bars were full, and well the Sens lost so everyone just went home afterwards. Ami and I ate sushi and watch hockey, it was a good combo, too bad it wasn't a huge party though.

Mouse Crisis, Part Five

I was warned a couple days ago that mice might be around. Tonight I took a nice long bath only to return to my room to find a tiny dead mouse lying just inside my doorway. Binx must have killed it during my bath, or sometime earlier and I just hadn't noticed. This left me alone in the house, wearing only a towel, and fairly upset. My roommates were all gone. Em is tree planting for the start of the summer, The Boy Roommate is still in Madrid, Ami and The New Roommate were out at the movies. I frantically called around trying to find someone to come and dispose of the bleeding carcase. I stayed downstairs watching TV until just after midnight when Ami and The New Roommate returned home. We played the "Your A Boy" card and The New Roommate kindly cleaned it up for me.

Divide

Their eyes go back and forth between us
My eyes rest on her
Cold, even, calm
There won’t be anger
We won’t yell, or cry
Today we will just divide

The first thing we bought together
Blue couch
Now sits in the den
Hours spent over catalogues
Weekends laughing in department stores
Spending evenings cuddled with pizza and movies
I get it
It matches my new place

I found this poem in the vast reaches of my computer hard drive. I have a lot of saved writing that I have done over the years. I think this one is fairly recent, and was going to be a lot longer and talk about a lot more items, but of course I got board with it, or uninspired, or busy and never finished it. About time spent with lawyers splitting up the material things during a messy divorce, I thought it was fitting since Ami and I just spent time tonight sitting on the stairs discussing marriage, mature relationships, cheating, and divorce.

Birthday Reflelections

I have done some thinking and hands down this year was my best birthday since moving to Ottawa. I woke up and had a lovely bath, then Ami whisked me away for a birthday surprise, which turned out to be kayaking on the canal, something I have always wanted to to. I got a great arm workout and saw baby ducks and geese. I had some time by myself to get some school and house work done as well as time socializing. I didn't have to work, which was great. 26 people wished me a Happy Birthday on Facebook (which alerts you as to when peoples birthdays are coming up.) Throughout the day I got so many calls and e-mails from friends and family. Kristen even called from Oakville. Teri called me a few times, and on the last one told me that one of our favorite shows, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," was starting again, on my birthday night, after a 5 month hiatus. Today at work, I showed up to another surprise, My Cool Boss had got me a chocolate fudge birthday cake. What a great birthday!!

Poor Guy

I think The New Roommate (he is getting Anna's old blog nickname) has finally moved in. His first real night here involved The OC, Ami and I dishing about guys, and me waxing my legs. It was more than a little bit Estrogeny. Problem is for the last few weeks Le Manoir has been a girl house, since he hadn't moved in yet, and The Boy Roommate was in France. I'm going to have to get used to guys around again and start wearing pants.

Mouse Crisis, Part Four

They are back! While watching Sex and the City last night with Ami and Em, I gather a mouse fell off the stairs and down into the hall. Ami quickly said "Chris close your eyes, there is a mouse." This prompted me to leap up and stand on the couch. There was no screaming or crying though, I'm slowly getting better at handling it. Em and Ami chased it around the TV stand for a while with a take-out container and shoe. It was grey, tiny, and very cute. When caught it released outside alive. Binx ignored the whole event.

Free Cone Day

The joys of Facebook are so numerous. A few weeks ago I saw this event for the Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day. I didn't believe it, but info on the event listing on Facebook, and more info on the Ben and Jerry's website confirmed it to be true. There is a store in Ottawa, on Riverside. I asked The Boy Roommate to drive Ami and I there, though found out it was at the closest mall. We got free cones, it was great. Their ice cream is so good, very gourmet. I will have to make the April 17th thing an annual event, but I would never buy a cone there, I'm sure they are way to expensive. The Boy Roommate had to go, but Ami and I spent a bit of time wandering around the mall and than walked home to burn off some of the ice cream calories.

Homemade Sushi

Made this tonight. Ami and I rock!!
