There is sun light peeking through the top of the drapes in the bedroom. IT IS FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!! The light doesn't wake me up or keep me awake (I don't need darkness to sleep) but the birds do. It is too early in the day for birds, go back to your nest beds.
I love that the days are getting longer, but hate that it also means the mornings are getting earlier.

Basement Before & After - Open Up!
Since the final completion photo of this Before and After features Two, I am posting it on Caturday.
I think this is my favourite Before and After comparison, opening up the living area in the basement at Casa Verde was one of our main goals. Originally, at the bottom of the stairs was a small table and thin hallway - the rest of the space was 'wall-ed' off for the utility room and laundry machines. There was then a door (which you can see someone walking through on the right-side of the top photo) into this dark cluttered central space:
By taking out that door and moving the utility room wall WAY over we were able to completely open up the front (north) part of the basement and provide a small living area. The bathroom door frame stayed in through the entire demolition and re-build - we then put the same door back into the frame afterwards. (All other doors in the space were replaced.)
The brick column also didn't move, since it holds up the house! But we did clean it, seal it, and paint it. If you have a keen eye you can see the three new tiles that the contractor installed for us because we knocked down a wall that had previously been part of the bathroom. (Jason and I tried to find matching tiles but we didn't quite get them right.) Also, the floor that looks like hardwood is actually a vinyl sheet, everyone really likes it. We painted using the same colours as upstairs, the living area in the basement is the same as our master bedroom upstairs.
We are so happy with the space and this is one of the best picture to show the amazing transformation.

A Warm House
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A Sunday post about my Dad, named after a song that he loved.
Jason and I had a housewarming party yesterday. It was nice to show people Casa Verde who had never seen it before and give others an update of the place now that it is no longer chaos.
I think Dad would have liked the house. I am having a hard time bringing his memory into the space and hope that hanging his photograph will help that. I can't decide if I want it in my bedroom again or put it in the living room this time.
I hope he would be impressed with all the work we are doing and the labour that comes from the challenge to be thrifty with our ever growing renovations. There are parts of Casa Verde that I know we would like: the main floor original hardwood floors, the beautiful staircase, moving the laundry upstairs, our cherry tree and garage in the backyard.
Also, I agree with Mom, I don't think he would ever be able to wrap his head around the value. The price would always bug him - I know we made a good purchase, but Toronto is crazy and I don't think he could get past the cost to truly enjoy Casa Verde.

Finally A Bed
Two Approves Of The New Bed
Photo by ME, with my phone
The boxes for the new bed sat in our dining room for a long while and then last week the old frame fully broke. It happened in the middle of the night, woke me up, and couldn't be fixed. We decided that we would sleep on the futon in the office and that would inspire us to get going on setting up the new bed. As our nights' sleep got worse and worse, we continued to have little time to get going on the task. First we needed to dismantle the old broken bed, find a place to keep the huge king mattress for a while, then pile up and put aside all the storage bins we keep under it. Secondly, we needed to clean. Thirdly, this past weekend, I applied Scotchgard to the pieces, since the whole thing is fabric. I did three thin coats, leaving it to dry for 12 hours between each. Lastly came putting it together, when Jason reviewed the direction he discovered that the slats all had to be screwed into the frame (instead of just rolled out and laid on top like last time.) So last night we decided to tackle the task and the two of us, using screwdrivers, got the whole thing put together and the 64 screws finished. Now we have a bed again!
(See Image to Left - Jason gingerly sits on our freshly assembled bed, "Please don't break, please don't break, please don't break.")

Stacked Sheets
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A post about my Dad each Sunday, named after a song that he loved.
My dad always changed my sheets when I was growing up. (And when I say 'growing up' I mean up to the age of 19 when I went to university. Then when he visited, I would often ask for his help with my bed.) He has amazing tucking talent! I don't think it is 'nurse style' corners but the bed ends up being very tight and neat.
I really loved when this happened when we lived in Paris, because it would make the room so messy. I prefer to sleep with lots of blankets (instead of just a single big duvet) and they would get thrown all over the floor in my room. My dad would turn or flip my mattress most of the time too.
Some of the time, Dad would ask which way I would like my sheets. Sheets have a 'pretty side,' this is especially true with ones with patterns, the pattern is darker on the good side. Plain sheets just have a good/bad side based on the hems and stuff at the ends.
I don't like the envelope style. My dad was always explaining that if you make the bed that way, your body is surrounded by the good parts of the sheets. (Obviously the fitted/bottom sheet it always put on the same way, so mainly this is about the top sheet.) In an envelope, you can lift up the sheets and blankets and see the pretty pattern, etc. But I always wanted (and still do) 'stacked sheets' where the top sheet faces up. The good part faces the ceiling, which means I am lying under the 'bad' side and the pretty pattern is covered by the blankets, I prefer that though. Stacked sheets are the only way for me. Which way is your bed made, or do you not notice a good/bad side with your top sheet?

Not Helpful This Time
When my mom visits she tends to try to clean my place. This is always welcome, since I hate cleaning. On one of her recent times at Rrunuv Bayit she put away some of my pants that had been out (either on a chair or the futon, or somewhere). However, one of them was a pair of jeans that had ripped a bit. I set these aside last month when it happened, thinking that I would use them as 'painting pants' (basically I have an outfit or two that I wear when painting a room or doing dirty yard work, etc.) Well, my mom put them away in the box marked 'Bottoms' (I keep my clothes on an open bookshelf in black decorative boxes.) This morning I was having a hard time finding normal blue jeans that were clean, the only ones around were my red polka dot ones and a bright blue pair. Then I glanced in the 'Bottoms' box, saw the pair in there and threw them on.
Within 5 minutes of sitting in my chair at work this morning, I twisted in such a way that the rip stretched across the width of my thigh (in the back, right below my bum.) I wish this was a funny story, which people respond to with a, "oh man, haha, yup that sucks, we have all been there, don't worry about it, not a big deal." Then I could add it to my list of strange, slightly dumb, awkward work situations (See TAG: Dumb) but instead it became much more embarrassing (See TAG: Embarrassed) than I would have thought. The few that I told at work, along with the explanation, "I am just going to stay here, sitting in this chair, all day," were helpful, offering me various sweaters and shirts to help cover when going around the office. However, I was greeted with a lot of pity and even a comment that this should 'inspire me to get back to the gym,' all of which dampened my mood. So, I guess it ended up being more humiliating than I normally would have thought a wardrobe malfunction could be. Not my best day at the office.
And of note, I am going to ensure that I participate in any cleaning/tidying that my mom does now at my place so as to stay aware if any important items getting moved to a new place.

A Bed From West Elm
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A post about my Dad each Sunday, named after a song that he loved.
This is more of a post about West Elm than it is about Dad. However, off and on during our interactions with West Elm, Jason and I felt a bit overwhelmed and talking with my father would have helped. Here is the story:
Over a year ago, before Jason moved into Rrunuv Bayit with me, we decided we needed to purchase a bed. In fact, it was a major request of mine, in terms of Jason moving in, that his king-size mattress, a the very minimum, be put onto a bed frame. We decided not get a headboard and bought a bed frame from West Elm.
It took us a long to find a bed; we looked at a lot of places. We had a fairly tight budget but at the same time with a king-size mattress we needed a bed that was high quality. Then there was the small room to think of and the desire for storage. We choose West Elm because they have good quality furniture that is made of solid wood (instead of a composite or worse.)
When we got the pieces of the bed frame back to the apartment to put together, the metal joining element at the top of one of the legs was bent a bit. We decided to just go with it and that leg never quite sat right, Jason tried to rejoin it at the correct angle a couple of times over the past year but it didn't really work. During the summer the leg completely broke off and we had to stack old university textbooks under it to support the bed.
During a visit to West Elm this summer to pick up some plants, Jason mentioned our broken bed at the check-out. It actually happen to be the store manager checking us out and she gave us her card, telling us to email her photos. It took us a while to find the time to take the bed apart enough to get good photos of the broken part, but Jason emailed her a month or two later. We didn't hear back and Jason sent another email about a month after that. The manager replied and asked us to schedule a time to come in and discuss options. She mentioned that the bed frame we had was out of stock and not anticipated to be available in Canada for a while.
When we got to the store a week or so later we were told that they would exchange our bed frame for a new one and that we should go look at the options. However, we really like our current one and were concerned that we wouldn't find an appropriate replacement, especially since it took us so long to find the perfect one the first time. We tried to explain this, and we had brought the broken leg asking just for a replacement piece. The manager took the broken bit to go see if they had anything in the back and in the meantime asked that we browse the bed options.
West Elm has a few bed frames; and the one we had originally chosen and currently have was the more sturdy and expensive one. The options available at the moment in Canada are either too flimsy with thin legs or too low, eliminating our much needed storage space or in a style Jason and I aren't very keen on. However, the manager had said we could consider the beds as well but even the cheapest bed costs considerably more than the bed frames. We liked two styles and determined that one of them would be a better choice for us (of the two, the first is three times the cost of our bed frame and the one we ultimately decided was best is around twice the price of our bed.)
We had questions about the offered exchange, since we couldn't afford the price difference and were not interested in any of the frames currently available. When we were told it would be a straight exchanged we replied that it felt "overwhelmingly generous." I has been a really amazing example of excellent customer service. The whole thing just feels like something I would like to share with my Dad. He worked in retail for his entire professional life and really appreciated when companies worked hard to maintain customer satisfaction.
Jason and I are excited about getting a new bed, that won't be supported by text books. We will have it in a few weeks. (I will post pictures.)

The Other Picture Up
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A post about my Dad each Sunday, named after a song that he loved.
In the spring I posted one of my favourite pictures of Dad and mentioned that it is in a frame with one of my mom and hangs in my room. Well, this is the only other photo I have up right now that has my dad in it:
It sits on a shelf near my desk in a red Carleton University branded frame (I cut the frame out of this picture). It was taken on the day of my graduation, at the portrait studio on campus. My Aunt Laura (left) and my mom are also in it. It is a bit cheesy, and the frame is really quite cheesy, but I like it a lot.

The Cat And The Mucus Vigil
I have a very bad cold. I haven't had one in the summer in a very long time, not that there is any good time to get one. I am loving my new job and don't want to miss a second, so am taking the weekend to try to fully heal from this thing. This has meant a full Saturday in bed, sleeping, medicating, applying Vicks Vapor Rub, drinking water, and blowing my nose.
Two has stayed with me on the bed all day. It has been so sweet. Mainly she sleeps down at my feet but sometimes comes up and lies beside me so I can pet her. Jason has been great too obviously, going to the drug store, making me food. However, it has been Two that has been keeping me company. It is great to have a cat.

TB - September 2006
Throwback Thursday - Scroll to the bottom of the month and read up.
Looks like I started out the month pretty sick. I would have been leaving Second Cup, since it was just a summer job and there is a pretty scathing post about it. Also a little hic-up with depression and the first mention of my beloved 'Sleep perchance to dream' wall sticker that I have since bought tons of. I went to Waterloo (with side visits to St. Jacobs and Guelph) to see Teri for her birthday - a trip that I only faintly recall. She would have been turning 22, this September she will be turning 30. Where does the time go?!?
Noted Post: I love the Before and After pictures of my room at Le Manior. It was such a huge and awesome room, pretty much the size of my whole apartment now - okay, that isn't true but it was insanely massive.

A Classic Caturday
Last year I posted the hilarious video of the Sad Cat Diary. One of the first things it talks about it cats seeking out black pants to sit on. A few weeks ago I had made the bed and set out my workout clothes. When I returned to the bedroom this is what I found:
Two often sits on our bed. The bed is very big and she has certain spots that she likes: the bottom of the bed, the middle, curled up on my pillow or stretched out on my side. She tends to avoid the top left side/corner that is Jason's and I have never seen her sit or sleep there. That is until I put black pants there, on an otherwise empty bed:

My Picture Of Dad
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A post about my Dad each Sunday, named after a song that he loved.
I can't believe that I have never posted this picture before! It is 'the one' that I most commonly associate with my dad. I took it at a castle in Portugal in 2006. There is a 'matching one' of Mom taken at the same time and I have used that one on Always Standing before but not this one of Dad. I have these two pictures together in a frame in my room, and have for a long time. I even had it up in Ottawa - you can see it hanging on my wall in the picture in this post. I think I gave Mom and Dad a set one year for Christmas, and Uncle Simon ask for copies and has them as well.
I can remember a couple of things from this trip to the castle. Firstly, that walking around the ramparts, more than a story above ground, there were no railings or protection of anything. I was completely surprised by the difference from the overly safe and cautious Canadian tourist sites. Heath and safety codes are very different in Europe. Secondly, I believe that it was a bit of a cold, grey, and rainy day. Thirdly, right behind Dad in this picture is a little section you can lean through and on the other side was just some random house and their backyard. In the backyard was the biggest lemon (or might have been orange) tree I had ever seen. I still think about that tree from time to time.
It was a great trip. And I have always thought that this was a great picture of Dad!

19 Things Only Geminis Understand
------------------ from Buzzfeed
Note: I am a Gemini, a lot of these are true for me.
1. You can get SUPER SUPER excited about ANY idea, so long as it’s not more than a few seconds old.
2. You will strike up conversations with just about anybody, you can’t help it, you want to know everyone’s story. You will strike up conversations with just about anybody, you can't help it, you want to know everyone's story.
3. Though sometimes, you can get on too much of a roll while chatting.
4. You want to hang out with everyone, but you sometimes forget that’s not humanly possible.
5. Being home sick on a weekend is just the worst thing that could ever happen to you.
6. You’re obsessively curious about everything, so your Google search history is… fun. You’re not creepy, you just want to know all the things. You’re also a little creepy.
7. You’ve bought a ton of daily deals that you’ve never used.
8. Your room is a mess because everything you own is in the last place you were standing right before you lost interest in it.
9. You’re very eager to start text and Gchat conversations, but you’re not really good at remembering to end them.
10. You’re so excited to hang out that you frequently over-schedule yourself.
11. You have started and then abandoned at least 3 blogs.
12. There are two very different sides to you, and sometimes it can freak people out.
13. On the one hand, you approach a party with the same level of dedication that some people approach their PhDs.
14. But the other side of you is seriously focused and ready to take on that 40 page report or really get serious about updating their twitter.
15. Just when everyone thinks that you’re having a good time, you can just as quickly want to go home.
16. Your friends may sometimes think you’re unsympathetic to their problems because you have a hard time not seeing both sides of the story. You just really want to understand where everyone is coming from.
17. But you’re the person everyone calls whenever they want to take an impromptu trip to anywhere. Which means it’s sometimes super difficult for you to get anything done.
18. Because you’re so fickle, online dating is perfect for you and terrible for the people trying to date you.
19. But even though you may seem hot and cold, you’re really just two halves of the same person, which means you can be a good fit for everybody!
Note: I am a Gemini, a lot of these are true for me.

The Last Texts From My Dad
Sunday Mornin' Coming Down - A post about my Dad each Sunday, named after a song that he loved.
Dad was never very good with cell phones and he never got the hang of texting. His phone didn't have a full keyboard so that did make it more difficult. I need to delete a bunch of cell phone conversations and pictures from my own cell, since it is old and doesn't have much storage space. I thought I would put the last texts I got from him up on Always Standing so that I keep a copy. These were sent in October (about a month before he died.) I think it was during the time him and Mom came to Toronto to help Jason and I paint our bedroom. I worked during the day.
Punctuation, spacing, etc. remains intact.
Me: Can you come get me.? Text me when you get here.
Dad: Ok leave in ten mins. Dad
Dad: Gmm
Dad: Gmm

New Headboard
Jason has moved in, and his king-size mattress is now on a nice wood bed frame. However, buying a headboard of that size to go with the frame was going to be too expensive, and take up too much space in the small room. So, on a suggestion from Kristen, we are using a picture(s) as a headboard or focal point for the room. I made these and they hang above the bed:
(Made from leftover cream coloured cloth from the bottom of some old curtains that I stapled around from brown cardboard. I then used a marker to write our names. The centre one doesn't have anything written on it. I feel like the effect is very minimalist and goes with the dark wood, cream, and basic neutrals of the room.) Here are some close-ups:
(As you can see, I looked up a 'computer-style' font for Jason's name and a 'Shakespeare-style' one for mine. This reflects our difference in educational background, Computer Science and English, we are an odd mix.)

When Does It Count?
Jason is moving in. (This is both scary and exciting.) However, it is a long process and I don't know when to really decide that he has MOVED IN.
We haven't spent the night seperatly since the start of September, we have spent the night apart but never seperatly with each sleeping in their own apartment (instead, only apart at night when one of us is crashing at a friend's place.)
The King Size Bed is now at Rrunuv Bayit (much thanks to Kristen & Noah for helping with that) but he could still sleep at his old place since there is still a futon there.
Yesterday, there was a huge move of pretty much all the major items and furniture (huge thanks to Rob and Jason's brother-in-law). His computer is set up at Rrunuv Bayit though we haven't sorted out getting the internet to the back room being used as an office so it isn't super functional at the moment. He also could also work back at his old place on his laptop and he hasn't cancelled things yet so the internet would probably still work.
He is still paying rent at his other place and we haven't totally sorted out rent splitting yet for Rrunuv Bayit.
I think it will be OFFICIAL at the end of October when he is 100% out of his apartment and then we will be totally and utterly living together. (I am still finding this a very exciting but also overwhelming prospect.)

Two Is Helping
Two is a very helpful kitten. She loves to help with the cleaning and now she is helping with renovations. My parents are visiting and helping with some work at Rrunuv Bayit before Jason moves in. We rent so obviously the renos are pretty much just painting. I am switching the colour of this side table to match the new room colours and had taken it apart to prime it.
"Iz help you, non? Non! Iz zit here and yous like it. Look at me and all oz my majesty! So, yes, Iz am in zee drawer, somes-times all zee catz are de same."

True For My Cats
While Binx spent most of her time in the Napping Quarters, Two is well traveled on this map and will often disregard what ever is under the covers and just sit/lie on top of it - my legs, back, hip, stomach, chest, etc.
