Happy Easter

K sent us this image with a message that said "Looking forward to the day I can hang out with my peeps again"

Me, Maria, Matty, Teri, Monica
as Peeps! for Easter 2020 done by K

Super cute! Don't know why she picked a photo where Monica has her eyes closed but the rest of us look good. I don't think I have ever had a Peep, don't they have coconut on them, or is that something else? And I agree with her statement, this self-isolation for Covid-19 is really lonely.

Office Sneak Peek

This past weekend Aunty Nicky and Uncle Dabo came into Toronto to help Jason and I with Casa Verde (Jason's dad, David, also stopped by as well.) Keep coming back to Always Standing for some fun before and after images of our renovations, especially since, with having the amazing help over Easter, we have really moved ahead in a lot of areas.

In connection with this 'sneak peek' photo, I want to thank Aunty Nicky for:
- inspiring my idea for the office (she did a similar thing in Kev's room when he was younger)
- understanding my vision as I described it
- being positive, supportive and excited about our house and reno projects
- providing helpful suggestions about colour placement, angles, style, etc
- helping paint for hours upon hours over the weekend (including doing two coats on the bitch of a built in desk)
- gifting Jason and I with great painting tools, and a chalk line
- guiding me on the use of said chalk line
- assisting in perfectly creating something a little bit special for what was previously a pretty beat up and uninspiring room
Thank you so much Aunty Nicky!! I love it (and you.)

There is still some trim to install and paint, along with a few other final touches, I will do a proper 'before and after' for this room when it is totally done.

Casa Verde Colours - Like Baby Names

In the mid-1990s it became common place for expectant parents to learn the sex of their unborn child. This information wasn't offered (or maybe wasn't available) to my parents who were surprised with the birth of a girl (ME!) in 1984 followed by a boy (Mike) in 1987. Now, though not 100% accurate, parents are asked if they want to know.

I will make a side note about the fact that they are finding out the sex and not the gender, gender is a construct and the baby may identify with a different gender than their biological sex suggests.

Even though the information about the sex is offered, some people choose to still be surprised; like Taylor and Mark with Cadence, as well as, Mike and Aimee with Avery and my second nibling. Another recent pattern I have seen is finding out (and sharing) what the sex will be, but not the name. I really understand this one - people share their opinions, at times harshly, when the name is still in the 'we were thinking of X for a girl and Y for a boy' stage. However, once the baby is actually named people are less likely to tell the parents how much they don't like it.

I am finding the same with paint colours for Casa Verde, when I was just at the stage of looking at and choosing colours - everyone shared their strong opinions. I was sad to hear that 'accent walls' are no longer on trend and that beige is dated, though I suspected the later. I have been encourage to do whites and bring colour in decor instead of paint. Also grey. Apparently grey is very 'in' right now, which is good since I like grey and silver a lot. Kristen and I made the main wall in Runuv Bayit grey, it stretches through the kitchen and along the back hallway. After Kristen and Noah moved out, I changed the yellow wall in their bedroom to be grey, as seen in this Rasta photo. Lastly, I recently redid the kitchen with silver, covering up the pink/peach. Needless to say, I will be bringing grey to Casa Verde.

The colours for 5 of the rooms at Casa Verde have been chosen! Jason and his mom will go and buy the paint tomorrow so that we can take advantage of a sale that is happening. I have scheduled some posts on Always Standing that will happen this weekend that give you a taste of the colours I've picked. Using the super fun Colour Visualizer from Home Hardware I was able to put together a decent depiction of my colour plans. Now please remember to be nice about my choices; this baby has been named, aka these paints are purchased.

The actual painting will happen soon! Aunty Nicky is coming over Easter to help us paint the master bedroom, office, living room, dining room, and kitchen. The main hallway will need to be done by professionals at some point with scaffolding, but it is fine as it is for now. When we are done with the laundry room we will pick a colour for it but that will be well after we move in. I also plan to just use leftover paint in the colours already selected to do the suite in the basement when that renovation is finished.

Stay tuned for images of the Casa Verde Colours.

Almost Like Baby Chicks

So it is Easter weekend and I'm The Cottage for the weekend. (Teri, or was it Kristen? Someone was asking when I would stop calling it The Cottage and start just referring to it as my parents' house. I don't think ever.) Anyway, my grandparents are visiting along with their friend from England and later on today my aunt and uncle and little cousin will be here for a big turkey dinner.

This morning we went to the Bird Studies Canada - Long Point Bird Observatory. (I can feel your judgement already.) My grandparents are hardcore birders, and they wanted to show their friend. My mom and I went along because the place is pretty awesome. Anyone who I have brought there would agree that it is way cooler than they thought it would be. They catch birds in these huge nets strung up all around the forest, then go get them and put them in bags, then bring them back to the lab area to band, identify, and document before letting them go again.

Today the nets were filled with birds. I was walking past one that had three birds caught in it and was looking at them. My grandfather came up beside me and I turned to him and said, "This one is pretty. The one in the middle is not so pretty, I don't like that one very much. But I like this one, it's cute."

Pa replied with, "Wow, you're a great birder Chris." I was never very strong with the remembering of names or the identification part. I also don't like to be particularly near the wild birds. I like to watch other people handling them from a safe distance. Wild things, and dead things, just make me feel very very uncomfortable, and a little scared.

While we were there, wandering through the paths in the wooded area, someone saw a bunny. I missed the bunny but I figure that, and the fact that little birds are kind of like baby chicks, makes The Long Point Bird Observatory an appropriate place to visit for Easter.

An Afternoon With Mike - Part 3

There was also some math, which really hasn't changed much either. By this point though, I have moved over to share his sofa with him and have been helping him with fractions.
Me: Ok, so to divide a fraction you multiply the inverse.
Mike: I don't get it.
The Screen: 4/5 ÷ 3
Me: Well, write it down.
He pulls out his notebook and writes it down.
Me: And 3, as a whole number, is the same as 3/1. Write it down.
He does.
Me: So to divide a fraction you multiply the inverse.
Mike: I don't get it.
Even as he is saying this he is writing the correct equation of 4/5 x 1/3, so he obviously gets it.
Me: Yes like that, so to divide a fraction you multiply by its inverse.
Mike: Yeah, I don't get it.
He totally got it. He did the multiplication in the notebook in 2 seconds, getting 4/15. Which was one of the multiple choice answers on the screen. He clicked it and got the answer correct.
Me: See? To divide a fraction you just multiply the inverse.
Mike: I still don't get it. Why? How does that work?
Me: WHAT?!? I DON'T KNOW WHY!! I JUST KNOW HOW TO DO IT - TO DIVIDE A FRACTION YOU MULTIPLY ITS INVERSE! I DON'T KNOW HOW IT WORKS, JUST, TO DIVIDE A FRACTION YOU MULTIPLY ITS INVERSE!! -- YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHY!!!
Yes, I should not be a teacher.

An Afternoon With Mike - Part 2

Mike is doing online training modules as part of some type of explosives training. He is on a course at the moment. Still lying on respective sofas I was still reading while he was studying.
Mike: Chris, I may need your help with the next module thing, the guys on course said the questions are hard. Like, it is really tough science stuff. "It's Tuesday and you have a proton but the nucleus is 3", kind of thing.
Me: What?
I did help him and all my high school (and some of my university) math, physics, and chemistry came rushing back. I guess there hasn't really been many changes in those areas; X-rays and Gamma rays still move as waves, electrons are still orbiting the nucleus, there are negative and positively charged things in vacuum, that whole deal.

An Afternoon With Mike - Part 1

Little Brother Mike and I are lying on respective sofas in the living room. I having arrived a few hours earlier and him the day before. He is playing on his new iPhone and I am reading.
Mom: Can one of you go upstairs and grab a pillow for your dad?
Me: Shot not.
Mike: Nope, TI.
Me: Huh? What?
Mike: T.I.
Me: Yea, I have no idea what that means.
Mike: TI - Time In.
Me: I still don't get it.
Mike: Means I have been here longer.
Me: Moooom, Mike is acronyming me again.
Don't worry, one of us went up and got it, though at the moment I can't remember which. Also, "Time In" is some sort of military seniority thing, as in they have had more "Time In" the army than someone else so don't have to listen to them, or they get to boss them around, or something.

From A Facebook Status

I found out today, from my brother's Facebook status, that he is in New Brunswick now. Yup, my brother moved 5 provinces east a few days ago and I just learned this now, from Facebook. I asked him on Facebook 3 times over the last week to call me, I have heard nothing. I have asked my parents to mention to him that I would like him to call, nothing. I have tried to call him but no one picks up (he has neither call display or voice mail.) Now, I just found out, from his Facebook status of course, that he is going to be home for five days. I can only assume for Easter, but who knows for sure because he won't call me!

Trip Home

I went home for Easter and one of the things I did while I was there was to sort through my old memory boxes. It was really fun to go through my old keepsakes, toys, and school work. In honour of that I thought I would post a really bad poem. This is the first poem I ever wrote, well ever officially wrote down. I composed it completely myself, randomly just for the fun of it. (In later years my mom would often work with me, come up with rhymes, and write some of the lines.) It has won a couple of competitions and been published in an anthology at one point. I was pretty young when I wrote it, I know that I entered it in a contest in 1996 when I was 11 and it was probably written a year or more before that. It is not very good.

I've Got The Keys
I've got the keys
Mom gave me responsibility.
I could climb the statue of liberty.
I'm walking home,
All alone.
I have to open the door,
But I want to do so much more .
The whole key chain?
Is my mother insane?
Got the keys to the office, pool, and van.
Man Oh Man!
I got the keys to the car.
I could go really far.
The chain says "#1 Mom,"
But boy this time she was dumb!
I opened the door.
Didn't do more.
Oh well! Responsibility.

It's A Montage

I'm preparing to give away my bunny. I have had little Toby for over 3 years and I love him so much. The new apartment is too small for three people, two cats, and a bunny so I needed to find him a new home. Toby is also a lot more work then you would think and I don't have the time to handle and play with him as much as he deserves. I love him so much and it is so very hard to see him go. I'm comforted by the fact that I have found a great person to take him. I'm having friends over on Easter Monday to say goodbye to the little guy before he heads off to his new life.

Happy Holy Saturday

Religiously, Easter is pretty much the biggest celebration of the year. Before and after Easter Sunday are tons of celebrations and Holy days. My favorite being Palm Sunday which I missed celebrating this year.
*Palm Sunday – the Sunday before Easter
. The feast commemorates an event reported by all four Gospels (Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John) - the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. I don’t even know what that means, but it is customary in many churches for the worshippers to receive palm leaves. These are usually folded into the shape of little crosses, and I always thought they were so neat.
*Good Friday - the Friday before Easter,
commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
*Holy Saturday - it is said on this day Christ
"rested" in the tomb, in death.
*Easter Sunday - celebrates the resurrection of Jesus

*Easter Monday - the post-Easter festivities involved a week of celebration, but has been reduced to one day
